After Damiano Mazza (active 1573)
The Abduction of Ganymede 1650 - 1700
-
A drawing of the abduction of Ganymede.
The drawing shows an episode from Greek mythology: Ganymede, a beautiful shepherd boy, was abducted by Zeus, in the form of an eagle, and carried off to serve as cup-bearer in Olympus. Though ultimately derived from to Damiano Mazza’s 1573 painting in the National Gallery, London (inv. no.NG32), a black chalk drawing of Mazza’s painting, now in a private collection, is probably the model from which the present drawing was copied.
Inscribed on the verso Pasinelli Bolo.se. An attribution of the sheet to Lorenzo Pasinelli on grounds of style is not obvious, and paradoxically this may therefore be reliable.Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani. Listed in George III's Inventory A, c.1800-20, p.128, 'Moderna Schuola Romana', Tom. II, among '30. Of Bacicia Galli, Lazzaro Baldi, Baglione &ca:'
