A Council for the reunion of the Eastern and Western churches
-
A drawing probably representing a council discussing the reunion of the Eastern and Western Churches. In the background a pope enthroned presides over an assembly consisting of half of Catholic bishops and half of Orthodox patriarchs. On either side of the pope stand two figures who appear to be Eastern and Western Emperors, and to this group there appears on a cloud a bearded saint, probably St Peter. On the extreme left a Catholic bishop reads to the assembly from a pulpit.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; listed in George III's 'Inventory A,' c.1800, p.128 ('Moderna Schuola Romana / Tom. I.'), nos.1-6: 'Six of Germignana'
