The Raising of Lazarus c. 1600-15
-
A drawing of Lazarus, his arms outspread, being raised from the ground by three men. In the foreground two men appear to be digging in the disturbed earth with their hands. Christ stands on the right, flanked by several figures. On the left a group of figures seem to simultaneously surge forward and recoil in amazement. The whole scene is rendered in dramatic chiaroscuro. The sheet has been squared for transfer.
From a volume described in Inventory A as 'Scuola Veneziana'. The style recalls in general Palma Giovane. The actual handling of the pen is close to Bassetti, but the spatial disposition is unlike his mature work. It is possible that it may be work of his early period, before his visit to Rome in 1616, when he was still much under the influence of Palma Giovane.Provenance
Probably from the collection of Consul Joseph Smith and bought by George III in 1762; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.59)
