A drawing of Christ kneeling amidst trees, before the Baptist who pours water on his head. Above, the Holy Spirit and cherubim. Three figures and a child in the foreground. The figure of the Baptist is drawn on a separate sheet of paper, hinged to the drawing sheet; an alternative pose for the Baptist is beneath.
The drawing was traditionally attributed to Jacopo Bassano. It was catalogued by Popham (in P&W) as Palma Giovane; F. Antal suggested instead Passignano (in his review of P&W; Burlington Magazine, 1951, p. 32), an attribution with which Popham subsequently agreed.Provenance
From an album listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800, p. 59, ‘Titiano Paolo Veronese e Scuola Veneziana’, no. 16, ‘Bassano Giacomo’.
