Pomponio Amalteo (1505-88)
A group of musical angels c. 1535
-
A drawing of a group of seven musical angels. A study for a fresco of the Assumption of the Virgin in the church of Santa Maria dei Battuti, in San Vito al Tagliamento, near the town of Pordenone, which Amalteo was contracted to paint in 1535. Popham (in P&W) had cautiously followed the old ascription to Pordenone; the connection with the fresco was made by C.E. Cohen ('Drawings by Pomponio Amalteo', Master Drawings, XI, 1973, p. 251, noting 'the drawing … corresponds closely to the angels to the left of Christ, although in the fresco the group is more compressed to fit the narrow space, and there are differences of detail such as the exchanging of the positions of the flutist and lutenist and the omission of the two uppermost figures.'
