Abraham Bloemaert (1565-1658)
St Fredericus c.1586-1651
-
A pen and ink and wash drawing of St Fredericus standing in his bishop's regalia, full front. He is looking up to the right with his head inclined to the right, and his arms outstretched. There is a dagger in his breast, and his crozier is on the floor at his feet. The drawing is indented for transfer. St Fredericus, Bishop of Utrecht, was martyred in 838 AD on the orders of the wife of the Holy Roman Emperor. This is a design for one of twelve prints of the Bishops of Utrecht, engraved by Bloemaert's son Frederick. Utrecht maintained an artistic identity distinct from that of the rest of the Netherlands, with an artists' guild uniting both Catholic and Reformed factions.
Provenance
Abraham van Broyel sale, Amsterdam 30 October 1759, lot A31 where attributed to Abraham Bloemart, 'Een Bisschop, in de zelfde manier, hoog 16, breed 9½ duim'; bought by Pieter Yver (fl.50); probably acquired by George III; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 105: '38. Of Various subjects Sacred and Profane of the Flemish School, some of Marches of Army's and Battles')
