Cornelis Visscher (1629-58)
Portrait of an old woman in a bonnet dated 1652

-
A pencil drawing on vellumof the head and shoulders of an old woman looking down, with her face half-turned to the left. Signed and dated upper right: C. Visscher f / Aº 1652. The portrait is set within an oval and the sheet probably trimmed. Visscher was a renowned portrait draughtsman and engraver, and made many drawings on vellum of sitters in his home city of Haarlem. The fine, delicate pencil work, with a signature and date, show this was intended as a work of art in its own right.
Provenance
Abraham van Broyel sale, Amsterdam 30 October 1759, lot A51 where attributed to Cornelis Visscher, 'Een ditto Vrouwe Hoofd, van de zelve groote'; bought by Pieter Yver (fl.88, with A50); probably acquired by George III; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 105: 'Of Cor: Vischer...One Ditto [i.e. An Old Womans Head]1652')
