The portrait is set within an oval and the sheet probably trimmed. Visscher was a renowned portrait draughtsman and engraver, and made many drawings on vellum of sitters in his home city of Haarlem. The fine, delicate pencil work, with a signature and date, show this was intended as a work of art in its own right.
