An Assault on a Turkish City, in a panoramic landscape; squared for transfer. A study for Bernardo Castello's fresco in the centre of a vault in Palazzo Franchi, Genoa, where Castello had his studio; see R. Holland, Burlington Magazine, 1976, p. 301, fig. 47, as late 1590s.
Popham (in P&W) had earlier recognised Castello's authorship based on the resemblance to the engravings by Agostino Carracci after Castello for an edition of Tasso's Gerusalemme Liberata, Genoa 1590, suggesting that the present scene may depict the siege of Jerusalem in that epic poem.
Related drawings are in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris (Gatteaux 11974) and with with Yvonne Tan Bunzl, 1994.
[The drawing was included in D. DeGrazia, Bertoia, Mirola and the Farnese Court, Bologna 1991, no. D/R76, rejecting a supposed attribution to Bertoia that was an error in Blunt (Misc.), nos. 42, 43, conflating the attribution of the present sheet with 991196, which is by Bertoia.] -
