Cesare Aretusi (Modena 1549 - Parma 1612)
St Peter receiving the Keys, with God in Glory c.1580-1600
-
God the Father in a glory of angels, with below, St Peter receiving the keys in the presence of the Apostles. A study for the apse of the Metropolitana di San Pietro, Bologna, painted by Cesare Aretusi in collaboration with Giovanni Battista Fiorini. In the painting the figures of the Apostles are much larger in relation to the pictorial field.
The drawing was hesitantly catalogued as Polidoro da Caravaggio by Popham (1949), following a suggestion by P. Pouncey. D. Ekserdjian (orally, 1991) recognised the association with Aretusi's painting in Bologna. -
