Eustache Le Sueur (1616-55)
The Return of the Holy Family from the Temple 1645-50
-
A black chalk drawing of the Holy Family returning from the Temple. This is a study for a stained glass window erected by Francois Perrier after Le Sueur's design. The window was engraved by Landon when it was on display in the Musee des monuments francais in the convent of the Petit Augustins. Blunt has noted (in his catalogue of French drawings in the Royal Collection) that 'Le Sueur seems to have been inspired by Rubens' composition, which he could have known from engravings'.
Inscribed, in brown ink in an eighteenth-century hand: Le Sueur -
