A study for the portrait of Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, in the Museo Civico, Padua. The future Pope Alessandro VIII is seated full-length, facing slightly left and holding a biretta. Behind, on the left, are indications of an altar with a painting hung over it. In the painting a curtain, drawn aside, occupies this space. The drawing has been squared for transfer.

Bought in Rome by Richard Dalton, c.1768-9, on behalf of George III (20 scudi for a group of 67 drawings by Sassoferrato, RCIN 906046-906112; see list of disbursements in Royal Archives, 15602-3)
