A study for the figure of Cardinal Rapaccioli for the painting in the John and Mable Ringling Museum, Sarasota. He is shown full-length, seated in three-quarter view; with separate detail studies of the hands, below. The main study has been squared for enlargement.
In the background of the painting hangs a painting of The Madonna and Child, now in the Pinacoteca in Brera, executed by Sassoferrato in close imitation of Raphael's Madonna of the Tower.Provenance
Bought in Rome by Richard Dalton, c.1768-9, on behalf of George III (20 scudi for a group of 67 drawings by Sassoferrato, RCIN 906046-906112; see list of disbursements in Royal Archives, 15602-3)
