A drawing of the Madonna, full-length, standing on a cloud. She gazes heavenwards, and her hands are joined in prayer. Sketches of cherubs' heads surround her. It has been squared for enlargement. This is a study for The Immaculata in the Museé Massey, Tarbes. There is another version of the painting in the Brera, Milan, and a study for the hands was with Christies, New York (13 Jan 1993, lot 38).
Provenance
Bought in Rome by Richard Dalton, c.1768-9, on behalf of George III (20 scudi for a group of 67 drawings by Sassoferrato, RCIN 906046-906112; see list of disbursements in Royal Archives, 15602-3)
