Sassoferrato (1609-85)
St Flavia c. 1630-40
-
A drawing of St Flavia, half-length, with her head and gaze directed upwards, and her hands joined in prayer; squared for enlargement. This is an exact copy of Perugino's original, now in the Vatican, executed by Sassoferrato as a preparatory study for his copy of the painting in the Church of S Pietro, Perugia. It was presumably made when the original was removed from there.
Sassoferrato's copies after Perugino, of St Flavia, St Apollonia, and St Catherine, were hung above the door to the sacristy of S Pietro.Provenance
Bought in Rome by Richard Dalton, c.1768-9, on behalf of George III (20 scudi for a group of 67 drawings by Sassoferrato, RCIN 906046-906112; see list of disbursements in Royal Archives, 15602-3)
