A study for the figure of St John probably connected with the painting of The Crucifixion in the Galleria Nazionale, Urbino. This study, squared for enlargement, shows the saint turned to the right, so that if it is connected with the Urbino painting, Sassoferrato must at one stage have planned to have the angel on the right and St John on the left. For further studies see RCIN 906070, 906072, 906093.
Provenance
Bought in Rome by Richard Dalton, c.1768-9, on behalf of George III (20 scudi for a group of 67 drawings by Sassoferrato, RCIN 906046-906112; see list of disbursements in Royal Archives, 15602-3)
