The Madonna in Adoration c. 1640-85
-
A drawing of the Madonna, turned to the front, with her head slightly bowed and her hands together. This is a study for the whole figure for the painting of The Madonna in Adoration in the Dresden Gallery. There are other versions in the Vatican, at Bordeaux and in Berlin. The Dresden painting shows only the head and shoulders of the Virgin. In the lower part of the sheet is a sketch of the Virgin's right arm, and another of a woman's draped torso. This drawing has been squared for enlargement.
Provenance
Bought in Rome by Richard Dalton, c.1768-9, on behalf of George III (20 scudi for a group of 67 drawings by Sassoferrato, RCIN 906046-906112; see list of disbursements in Royal Archives, 15602-3)
