Attributed to Lelio Orsi (1508/11-87)
Jupiter destroying the rebel giants 1550 - 1600
-
A drawing of Jupiter on his eagle, hurling thunderbolts at Giants strewn amongst rocks below. Inscribed in red ink, lower right, 'zuccaro'.
Popham: 'The type of Jupiter and the manner of modelling the flesh with faint washes seems to me definitely Orsi's.' Salvini and Chiodi (Lelio Orsi, 1950, no. 4) accepted the attribution to Orsi, dating it c.1540-45. A note on the catalogue card by 'FK' (Fritz Koreny?) notes the similarity of the composition to the painting by Guido Reni at Pesaro, c.1636-7, but the present drawing must be of the sixteenth century, and the resemblance may be simply generic.
Provenance
Listed in George III's Inventory A, c.1800, p. 55, ‘Zucharo Passarotti e Altri Maestri’, among ‘21. to 45. Of Taddeo and Frederico Zucharo, their School, and other Masters in their Stile.’
