Attributed to Marco Marchetti da Faenza (c.1528-1588)
The Conversion of St Paul 1550-88
-
A drawing of Saul falling from his horse, surrounded by a melee of soldiers; a distant landscape with classical buildings; Christ and God the Father among clouds.
The drawing was published by Frederick Antal as Taddeo Zuccaro's first idea for his altarpiece in the Frangipani chapel of San Marcello al Corso, Rome (Old Master Drawings, XIII, 1938-39, p. 37). This was rejected by Popham (in P&W)), as a derivation from that painting, and 'clearly [by] Marco da Faenza, whose mannerisms are here, as always, very easily recognisable.' (The attribution to Zuccaro was also rejected by J. Gere, TZ, 1969, p. 82, n. 3.)Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20, p. 55, ‘Zucharo Passarotti e Altri Maestri’, no. 19. ‘... The Conversion of St: Paul / All unknown Masters of the Lombard School.’
