The Death of the Virgin c.1550-1600
-
A pen and ink drawing, with wash, showing the death of the Virgin. Behind her bed are the twelve apostles and a kneeling figure in the foreground may be a donor. Various attributions for the drawing have been suggested and although Anthony Blunt suggested that it was in the manner of Jean Cousin the Elder or Jean Cousin the Younger, it has also been connected with Luca Penni, Maarten de Vos, and Westphalia. The work is clearly a preparatory drawing, and has been squared for transfer in black chalk. The elongated format may suggest that it is for a predella or fresco.
