A drawing of Ulisse Aldrovandi, kneeling as he presents his Ornithologiae to Pope Clement VIII. Cardinals stand to the left, and the leaning towers of Bologna are visible in the background.
This has been Identified by V. Birke (Illustrated Bartsch, 40, Commentary, I, p. 209) as a study for the frontispiece to Aldrovandi's Ornithologiae of 1599, engraved by Brizio.Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820
