Studio of Cristoforo Roncalli, Il Pomarancio (1552-1626)
St Matthew c. 1600
-
A drawing in red and black chalk for a St Matthew in a pediment with an angel. Inscribed at the bottom in pen and ink: ‘camillo Proc.’
The present drawing shows a close relation to the figure of St Jerome, one of the Doctors of the Church painted by Cristoforo Casolani in the plumes of the vault of Santa Maria dei Monti, Rome (1602-1609). In the fresco, the saint is accompanied by a lion, and is surmounted by an angel in stucco made by Ambrogio Buonvicino (1588).
It is likely that the artist has drawn inspiration from the figure of St Jerome to create a new iconography for the figure of St Matthew with the angel. Although the style shows some resemblance to that of Procaccini, this drawing is probably by an artist working in the studio of Casolani’s master, Cristoforo Roncalli called il Pomarancio.
