Marco Ricci (Belluno 1676-Venice 1730)
An Italian town : A Capriccio signed and dated 27 Jul 1719
-
A drawing of a caprice view of a city with a river flowing under a bridge in the foreground; a cluster of buildings, including a round tower, overlook the quayside on the left, and there is a ruined temple on the right. A laden mule is heading across the bridge towards the right foreground. Signed, lower left: Marco Ricci disegno a Valdagno 27 Luglio 1719; Inscribed: No. 3 JS.
This drawing is closely related to a painting by Ricci, RCIN 404091, which was engraved in reverse by Fossato (XXIV Tabulae, no. xvi).
Valdagno, a village in the Adige valley, some eight miles south of Bolzano, does not now seem to possess any of the remarkable architectural features depicted by Ricci, and it seems safe to assume that the drawing and the painting are capricci, perhaps incorporating elements seen on the spot.Provenance
Probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice
