Marco Ricci (Belluno 1676-Venice 1730)
A classical portico, a statue and a seaport c. 1695-1710
-
A drawing of part of a classical colonnade, with an arch and a statue on a plinth on the right. Just beyond the columns is an equestrian statue, on the right, and there is a seaport in the distance.
On the verso of this drawing is a view of a palace with a courtyard and a domed area beyond. RCIN 905896 seems to be a detail study for the statue shown in RCIN 905916. In the latter the statue is equestrian, whereas in the former it represents a standing figure, but the anchor leaning against the statue in each case suggests that they belong to the same composition. A drawing faintly visible on the verso of RCIN 905926 may be connected with the same design, and since the recto drawing is certainly for a stage design, it is possible that the whole group may have been made for the same purpose and not for an architectural capriccio. See also RCIN 905857, 905859.
This drawing is among a group entirely lacking the marked mannerisms of what appears to be Ricci's late style, and can therefore be tentatively classed as early. These drawings are distinguished from the supposed late works by being small in scale and sketchy in quality. Some may be views noted down in front of nature, but in general they seem to be first ideas for imaginary landscapes.Provenance
Probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice
