The piazza of a seaport c. 1715-25

A drawing of a view of a piazza, on the left of which is a villa protected by a high wall with gateways and embrasures. On the right a figure stands on the flat roof of a jutting portico, looking down towards a statue of a sphinx. Part of the bowsprit of a ship is visible behind the portico, and in the distance on the left are buildings with mountains beyond. Inscribed on the verso: No. 1 JS.

Probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice
