Marco Ricci (Belluno 1676-Venice 1730)
The courtyard of a palace c. 1715-25
-
A drawing of a courtyard with steps up to a fountain and a palace beyond. On the right is a row of coupled columns flanked at both ends by statues of seated lions. In this drawing the statues between the columns are standing figures, and in the related drawing, RCIN 905929, they are equestrian.
The volume of drawings by Sebastiano Ricci in the Venice Academy includes two sheets of sketches representing the head, neck, and forelegs of a series of horses, the rest of the animal being in each case cut off by a vertical line, exactly as in Marco Ricci's design. The horses are shown on pedestals, of which one, drawn out in some detail, corresponds closely to that on the right of Marco's drawing, RCIN 905929. It may be deduced from this that Sebastiano Ricci helped Marco with those parts of his stage designs for which his particular talents as a painter of architecture and landscape did not equip him.Provenance
Probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice
