Marco Ricci (Belluno 1676-Venice 1730)
The ruins of an Ionic temple c. 1725-30
-
A drawing of a view of the ruins of an Ionic temple, with trees to the left and foliage sprouting from the upper story; with an urn on a plinth in the foreground, left; with several figures, including a group of three in the centre.
Ricci used this drawing, with variations, for the painting from Consul Smith's Collection, RCIN 404377. In the painting the composition is extended to the right by a statue and a column, and the temple is of the Corinthian order. The same temple, this time of the Doric order, occurs in an engraving by Volpato after Ricci, of which a painted version in reverse, attributed to Marieschi, was with Agnew's in 1921.
Provenance
Probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice
