Marco Ricci (Belluno 1676-Venice 1730)
A classical statue c. 1695-1710
-
A drawing of a statue of a man attired in antique military uniform with his left arm extended. The plinth is set upon steps against which rests an anchor next to a barrel.
This drawing is linked, via the inclusion of the anchor at the base, to the statue appearing RCIN 905916. It is among a group entirely lacking the marked mannerisms of what appears to be Ricci's late style, and can therefore be tentatively classed as early. These drawings are distinguished from the supposed late works by being small in scale and sketchy in quality. Some may be views noted down in front of nature, but in general they seem to be first ideas for imaginary landscapes.Provenance
Probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice
