Marco Ricci (Belluno 1676-Venice 1730)
An Italian church on a terrace c. 1695-1710
-
A drawing of a view of a church with a round tower, with an adjoining terrace bounded by a balustrade or fence. There are trees on the left and mountains in the distance. At the top of the sheet, on the left, is a rough sketch in black chalk.
This drawing is identical in style and size with RCIN 905873, and probably from the same sketch book. It is among a group entirely lacking the marked mannerisms of what appears to be Ricci's late style, and can therefore be tentatively classed as early. These drawings are distinguished from the supposed late works by being small in scale and sketchy in quality. Some may be views noted down in front of nature, but in general they seem to be first ideas for imaginary landscapes.Provenance
Probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice
