Marco Ricci (Belluno 1676-Venice 1730)
A village among hills c. 1695-1710
-
A drawing of a view of a village among hills, with trees near the foreground and mountains in the distance.
This drawing is among a group entirely lacking the marked mannerisms of what appears to be Ricci's late style, and can therefore be tentatively classed as early. These drawings are distinguished from the supposed late works by being small in scale and sketchy in quality. Some may be views noted down in front of nature, but in general they seem to be first ideas for imaginary landscapes.Provenance
Probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice
