Marco Ricci (Belluno 1676-Venice 1730)
A landscape with a man carrying a fishing-net c. 1695-1710
-
A drawing of a river landscape with a tree in the foreground, left, and a group including a man with a fishing net to the right. On higher ground jutting out into the river, a road leads to buildings in the middle distance. On the far side of the river a town lies beneath distant mountains. Inscribed, lower left: No. 10. JS.
This drawing is among a group entirely lacking the marked mannerisms of what appears to be Ricci's late style, and can therefore be tentatively classed as early. These drawings are distinguished from the supposed late works by being small in scale and sketchy in quality. Some may be views noted down in front of nature, but in general they seem to be first ideas for imaginary landscapes.Provenance
Probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice
