Marco Ricci (Belluno 1676-Venice 1730)
A landscape with a hermit c. 1720-30
-
A drawing of a mountainous landscape in the left foreground of which is a straw-roofed lean-to supported by trees. In front of this a hermit kneels in prayer, bent over a flat rock.
This drawing is connected with a painting, RCIN 401439, and with an etching, Bartsch 17. The painting and the etching both show a second hermit leaning against the tree in the middle of the composition.Provenance
Probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice
