Circle of Domenico Campagnola (1500-64)
A landscape with domestic buildings and a stream c.1525-50
-
A drawing of a group of domestic buildings spanning a river, in a landscape. The general character of the drawing is that of the landscapes of Domenico Campagnola, but Popham stated (in P&W), 'this rather finicky little drawing appears to be either a copy or a work of the shop.' The penmanship is less confident and forceful than Domenico’s and perhaps owes more to the delicate graphic style of his father Giulio Campagnola. Stamped with a George V blind stamp in the lower right corner.
The pen lines of an illegible figurative (?) drawing show through from the verso, laid down.Provenance
Listed in George III's 'Inventory A,' c.1800, p.119, Paesi Diversi, no.5/6: 'two Stile of Breugel'
