Recto: a study for an angel standing with arms outstretched and face tilted upwards; a detail of the head of the same angel: Verso: the same figure with the limbs in different positions. These are preparatory studies for The Adoration of the Cross, subject of the fresco in the centre of the ceiling, Cappella della Pietà, St Peter's.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 84: 'Study's for various paintings, not above three or four small Compositions in the whole Volume')
