Giovanni Lanfranco (1582-1647)
A study for St Thomas c.1638-44
-
A study for St Thomas, his body turned to the right, and his face tilted left, with his right hand raised toward the spectator, and his left supporting a spear at his side. This drawing corresponds exactly with an engraving by F. de Louvemont from a drawing by H. Trudus after Lanfranco, which is part of a series of the twelve Apostles published by Jacobus Raillardus in Naples in 1690. The engravings seem to be based on Lanfranco's frescoes in the church of SS Apostoli and in S Martino, and the present figure is like but not identical with one in the former church. The sheet has been squared.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 84: 'Study's for various paintings, not above three or four small Compositions in the whole Volume')
