Recto: a study for the head of a bearded man, half turned to the left and inclined forwards. Verso: a horse and rider, seen from behind, and a hand; the studies on the verso are in preparation for the painting of the Crucifixion in the church of the Certosa di S Martino, Naples. The studies of the head and the hand were formerly thought to be connected with the painting of St Peter healing St Agatha in the Galleria Nazionale, Parma.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 84: 'Study's for various paintings, not above three or four small Compositions in the whole Volume')
