Recto: a drawing of a veiled female saint seated on two tiers of clouds supported by putti. The paper is made up of three pieces, one of which bears a drawing of part of a saint writing with a skull to his right. Verso: three studies of putti, clouds, and angels. Both recto and verso studies were made in preparation for the fresco on the dome of S Andrea della Valle, Rome.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 84: 'Study's for various paintings, not above three or four small Compositions in the whole Volume')
