The Cessation of the Schism of Anacletus c. 1675-1700
-
A drawing of a group of figures in which Pope Innocent stands on the left with St Bernard, receiving the kneeling penitent Victor IV. Above them a host of angels bears the papal tiara aloft. This is a study for the whole composition of the painting formerly in the Abbey of Citeaux, now in the National Museum, Stockholm. It was a pendant to Giuseppe Passeri's St Bernard received into Citeaux by St Stephen; see RCIN 991231.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p.110: among 21 'Ditto of Pietro de Petris. And five of the School of Carlo Maratti')
