The Investiture of Carloman c. 1700
-
A drawing of a young man kneeling before a bishop on some steps in a church with an elegant classical interior. The figures surrounding the scene include two men bearing garments to cover the man's nakedness, perhaps as part of a ceremony of investiture.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p.110: among 21 'Ditto of Pietro de Petris. And five of the School of Carlo Maratti')
