A study for the whole design of the Fontana del Tribune, Piazza Barberini, Rome; Triton is viewed from the front with his conch raised to his mouth. He is seated on an open shell supported by dolphins, with the Barberini papal insignia held between their raised tails.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 114: 'Designs of Fountains in different parts near and at Rome')
