A design for the high altar of San Tommaso da Villanueva, Castel Gandolfo, which was executed 1660-61, with stucco work by Antonio Raggi; paired Corinthian columns flank a large oval medallion, which is supported by angels on the left and right, and surmounted by God the Father kneeling under a round pediment. Within the medallion is a lightly indicated representaiton of the Crucifixion altarpiece. See also RCIN 905588.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 114: 'Inside of Churches. The front of the Jesuits College at Rome. The Ciborio at St. Peter's. And different Altars most of them in Rome')
