A design for the tomb of a bishop c.1670-80?
-
A design for the tomb of a bishop, with his effigy seated on an inscribed sarcophagus. It is flanked by Corinthian columns and surmounted by a pediment set beneath an arch. Inscribed below: Disegno fatto dal Cavre. Gio : Lorenzo Bernino di eta d'anni 81 per uno delli Depositi della Capella che doveva fare il Cardinal Cibo al Popolo. It is possible that this drawing may be connected with an early scheme for the Cappella Cybo in S Maria del Popolo, but it is only connected with Bernini in the most general way.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 114: 'The Monuments of Popes in St: Peters. And the other a Design for one, and seven others for different Monuments')
