A design for the tomb of Alexander VII in St Peter's: within an elaborately carved niche flanked by corinthian columns, the statue of Alexander VII, kneeling in prayer, is set on an inscribed base surrounded by figures of the Four Virtues; a scale runs along the bottom. This monument was commissioned by Alexander but executed after his death between 1671 and 1678.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 114: 'The Monuments of Popes in St: Peters')
