Follower of Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680)
A study for an equestrian monument c.1670-1700
-
This design shows a large mural monument based on Bernini's Constantine, with a general in Roman armour on a rearing horse, against a curtain. The base below has space for an inscription, a relief of a battle, and captives. The whole group is enclosed between two decorated Ionic columns, supporting a broken pediment filled with weapons and a figure of Death over a blank coat of arms. The type of the captives suggest a connection with the defeat of the Turkish army in the battle of St Gotthard in 1664, or the Siege of Vienna in 1683.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 114: 'An Equestrian Statue surrounded with Tophy's & Ornaments')
