A study for the altar in the church of S Marta, Rome: angels support a medallion and below, putti flank a smaller medallion or framing device. There is a papal effigy in a niche on the right. Inscribed: Bernino. Formerly placed within the Bernini volumes. The church was decorated by Gaulli and Fontana with paintings and stuccos soon after 1670.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 114: 'Inside of Churches. The front of the Jesuits College at Rome. The Ciborio at St. Peter's. And different Altars most of them in Rome')
