The design shows a baldacchino, flanked by overlapping pilasters, and composed of four Salomonic columns like those of St Peter's. At the top putti carry the Crown of Thorns, and an angel holds the Cross. With a scale along the bottom.
The architectural style is that of Bernini, but the draughtsmanship is that of the group of finished drawings ascribed to the studio of G.P. Schor.Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 112, as by Bernini: 'Inside of Churches. The front of the Jesuits College at Rome. The Ciborio at St. Peters. And different Altars most of them in Rome')
