A study for the figure of the pope on the tomb of Urban VIII in St Peter's, Rome c.1627-50
-
A study for the figure of the seated pope on the tomb of Urban VIII: he is seen from a low viewpoint, with his right arm raised in benediction. This is an exact copy of the statue. (It is unclear whether Blunt considered it a study for, or a drawing after the monument.)
Provenance
Probably Carlo Maratta, and thus purchased by Pope Clement XI, 1703; by whom bequeathed to his nephew Alessandro Albani, 1721; from whom purchased by George III, 1762; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 114: 'The Monuments of Popes in St: Peters')
