A drawing with watercolour of Christ appearing to the Virgin Mary, a host of musical angels above.
The drawing is a study for Albani's altarpiece of c.1597-99 for the Oratorio di San Columbano, Bologna (on deposit at the Pinacoteca, inv. 834; see C. Puglisi, Francesco Albani, Yale 1999, pp. 90-93, no. 2.V. The identification was made by A. Weston-Lewis: see Master Drawings, 2006, p. 305).Provenance
Probably acquired by George III, c.1760. First recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inventory A, p. 53: Perino del Vaga, Bald.re Peruzzi, Nico: del Abatte &c, pp. 15 to 51, '... of various old Lombard Masters with some Roman & Florentine, as also of the Caracci School...')
