Giorgio Gandini del Grano (1489?-1538)
Angels in adoration 1520-30
-
A drawing of five flying angels among clouds, in adoration. Probably a study for the vault of the Cappella Maggiore of the Duomo, Parma, initially commissioned from Correggio, later transferred to Gandini, and completed by Girolamo Mazzola Bedoli. The design is en suite with a study of saints on clouds by Gandini in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. 17629; A.E. Popham, Correggio's Drawings, no. A122; see K. Oberhuber, Master Drawings, 1970, p. 282, pl. 40).
The drawing was attributed by Popham to Bernardino Gatti, following from his attribution to that artist of RCIN 990599; but the reattribution by Oberhuber of that drawing to Gandini brings this in its wake, along with the relationship noted above. -
