The Adoration of the Magi c.1550-1600
-
A drawing of the Adoration of the Magi, the Holy Family on the left under a stable awning, the Magi and their entourage standing to the right with gifts. Squared for transfer.
The drawing is stamped at lower left with the five-point star mark associated with Nicholas Lanier (Lugt 2886), and is inscribed in an early hand (not William Gibson's, as Popham suggested in P&W): Baldassare di Siena. It is not by Peruzzi, and seems to be later sixteenth-century, central north Italy, but the 'influence of the Carracci' suggested by Popham is hard to see.Provenance
Nicholas Lanier (?his five-pointed star, Lugt 2886); probably acquired by Charles II
