Attributed to Girolamo da Carpi (1501-56)
The Vestal Tuccia carrying water in a sieve c.1550
-
The Vestal virgin Tuccia, profile left, her arms extended holding a sieve full of water. Popham (1949) identified the drawing as a copy after a lost chiaroscuro frescoed by Polidoro on a house in Montecavallo, Rome, as described by Vasari (Milanesi V, p. 146) - cf. also RCIN 905470, 905476.
Popham identified the copyist as Girolamo da Carpi, which seems secure. -
